Tshabalala Comments On His Relationship With AKA

Tshabalala, also known as “Slaying Goliath,” comments on his relationship with AKA as well as his own professional life.

Over the course of the weekend, a pop-up store located at Mall of Africa sold out of all of the artwork that was created by ‘Slaying Goliath‘ in memory of the late rapper AKA.

David ‘Slaying Goliath’ Tshabalala, an illustrator, had the opportunity to meet AKA for the first time. It is commonly believed that one should never meet their idols since they are almost never what you anticipated they would be. However, Tshabalala’s encounter with AKA was actually quite different.

It was a pleasant experience for me, she said. It had been around twenty minutes since he had performed, and although he appeared exhausted, he maintained his composure. He told me that he is a fan of my work and took a selfie with me, Tshabalala said in an interview with The Citizen for the publication.

Tshabalala gave an interview to The Citizen just a few days after his artwork, which was created in honour of AKA, was completely sold out at a pop-up store located at Mall of Africa. The pop-up store was established in honour of AKA because it was actually his birthday on Sunday.
Respecting the AKA

The limited edition artwork, which is a picture of the long-deceased rapper, is an illustration that he created the previous year. It is comprised of the titles of his favourite songs by AKA. After AKA was killed in Durban, he created the piece using his own words.

I never did it for any commercial gain; it was something I normally do in terms of social commentary, and I wanted to pay homage to AKA, said Tshabalala. It was something I did in relation to social commentary. The fact that the family came up to me meant a great deal to me.

Tshabalala created 21 pieces, each of which can be purchased for R7,000. The AKA Foundation will get the earnings from this event. The twenty-one one-of-a-kind items are a tribute to AKA, who was known for being a classy and sophisticated individual.
