Tyla’s Grammy Triumph Over Nigerian Singers Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and Tems has Reignited The Nigeria-South Africa Rivalry As The Two Countries Prepare To Face Off In The 2023 African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) Semi-finals.

The rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa has ancient roots in the African continent’s history.

Over the years, the two nations have competed intensely, particularly in the AFCON. The 1996 AFCON was a watershed occasion, when South Africa unexpectedly defeated the defending champions, Nigeria, altering the balance of power in their football dynamics.

The two teams will face off again on Wednesday, but this time there will be more rekindled animosity between the two countries.

Tyla’s song, “Water,” won the African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards, beating out known Nigerian singers Davido (Unavailable), Asake (Amapiano), Burna Boy (City Boys), and Ayra Starr (Rush)

The Amapiano derby was created by the two entertainment giants, and while Nigerian musicians have clearly grown larger than their African counterparts, Tyla’s success at the 66th Grammys is another soccer punch on the global stage.

According to Nigerian student Ochei Blessing, some Nigerians believe South African beats are superior to Nigerian beats. She believes Tyla merits the award more than the other Nigerians because, in her words, “their beats makes more sense than ours, even though we have more talent than them”.
